I've been a professional medical illustrator since 1993 and a commercial illustrator since 1991. I received my Masters of Science degree from the Medical College of Georgia in the Graduate Program for Medical Illustration. Previously, I was a cross-discipline major in art, language and science. I was torn between my love for drawing, premed and traveling abroad. I spent 3 years studying French at Laval University in Quebec, Canada. It was from the University of Georgia, that I finally received my bachelor's degree in French Literature.
I was a traditional media artist up to about 1994 when I made the switch to computers and never looked back. I've worked all over the U.S. including the Arizona Heart Institute, Beck Visual Communications, Inc. based in Minnesota, and the Medical College of Georgia. Although I had some exposure to Strata3d in 1992, my first real experience with 3d was in 1995 with Softimage3d on an SGI Indigo2 Extreme ($$$!!!)- that was at work. At home, I played around with something that I could afford - the blacksheep 3d program, Imagine (Impulse, Inc). The program was half-way decent back in 1995-7 but has since lagged behind and hasn't remained competitive. I've also used Studio Max for about 3 years off and on - but I've never quite gotten used to it's workflow. For the last seven years my main 3d app has been Lightwave 3d with Cinema 4d XL running a close second. I'm now beta testing for messiah:studio 2.0.
